Morgan is the eldest daughter of Gorlois and Igraine, Duke and Duchess of Belerion. At the start of the series, she is a little girl rapidly developing astonishing magical powers. However, as neither of her parents are magical, the source of her magic is a mystery to her.
Gorlois is the Duke of Belerion, ruler of the farthest south-western federate on the island of post-Roman Britain. A renowned warrior and beloved leader, he has sworn loyalty to High King Vortigern. He is the husband of Igraine and father of Morgan.
Igraine is the Duchess of Belerion, wife of Gorlois and mother of Morgan. Formerly known as Eigyr, she is the daughter of the Saxon Chief Hengist and Gwen, Princess of Gwynedd. The sister of High Queen Rowena and an influential figure in her own right, Igraine was educated in both Druidic and Christian beliefs.
Merlin is a little boy of Morgan’s age, who, like her, is gifted with magical powers. He is the son of Aldan, Princess of Gwynedd, the twin brother of Ganieda, and the grandson of King Einion of Gwynedd. The identity of his father remains shrouded in mystery but dark rumours abound.
Ganieda is a little girl of Morgan’s age and Merlin’s twin sister. The daughter of Aldan, Princess of Gwynedd, and granddaughter of King Einion of Gwynedd, she was born blind, deaf and mute. However, like Morgan and Merlin, Ganieda possesses mystical powers of her own.
Blanchefleur, or Fleur, as she prefers to be called, is the Princess of Ynys Môn, daughter of King Pellinore and Queen Sardoine, the latter being Igraine’s younger sister. Fleur’s parentage is a mystery: she was found as a baby on an abandoned ship from the East, and was adopted by the King and Queen. She and Morgan are the same age, and are best friends.
Safir is a child from Babylon who arrived at Tintagel as a stowaway on a ship. Three years older than Morgan, and blessed with precocious wisdom and intelligence, Safir earned the prestigious position of squire to Gorlois and is training to become a knight. However, the truth about the real identity of the Saracen runaway must be kept secret at all costs.
The adopted son of Elffin the fisherman, Taliesin, a former page boy in the service of Gorlois at Tintagel Castle, is now the apprentice to the leader of the Druids, Grand Master Cadwellon, the most powerful religious figure in Britain. Two years older than Morgan and one of her closest friends, Taliesin has no knowledge of his true origins or background.
Sebile is the physician and healer of Tintagel Castle, and Morgan’s tutor. A woman of extraordinary knowledge and capability, Sebile’s unlined face belies her age. No one knows how old she is, but she carries with her an aura of ancient wisdom. She comes from a sunny land which is the source of much of her knowledge, a land far from the mists and rains of Britain.
Father Elfodd is the Christian priest of the chapel at Tintagel Castle, his parish including the nearby village of Trevana. A young man of great intellect and scientific curiosity, he is eager to modernise the world with his new faith, to emulate the example of Christ, to work amongst the poor, and to fight injustice. He is a tutor to Morgan and Fleur.
Grand Master Cadwellon is the leader of the Druids in Britain, the most powerful religious figure in the land and Counsellor to High King Vortigern. A wise, educated man of unshakeable belief and honour, he is tolerant – albeit wary – of the new Christian faith and has a youthful aura at odds with his venerable age.
Myrddin is a Druid and the right hand man of Cadwellon. Opposed to Cadwellon’s tolerance of the new Christian religion, he is ambitious and power-hungry, seeing the Druidic Order as a means of achieving his aims. Myrddin is drawn to Merlin’s powers and seeks to influence the boy, but is fearful and resentful of Morgan’s magic.
